The Patron Saints of the Crotta Family

c. 1750
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (Italian (active Venice, Würzburg, and Madrid) 1727–1804) After a painting by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (Italian (active Venice, Udine, Würzburg, and Madrid) 1696–1770)
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's etching reproduces a painting by his father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, which was commissioned by the head of the patrician Crotta family to celebrate their ancient lineage. The painting depicts Saint Grata, believed to be an early Crotta ancestor, presenting the head of Saint Alexander to her pagan father, who had ordered Alexander's execution. Flowers miraculously grow from the saint's severed neck.
