Oval #2 dates to the beginning of Elizabeth Murray's career. Through thick layers of white paint, an ovoid form quivers on the canvas while wisps of blue point to the artist's continued experimentation with the brush. Charged with an energy that characterizes Murray's more recent paintings, Oval #2 serves as a springboard for her later, larger shapes. The composition also exemplifies the blend of humor and pathos that the artist articulates so well in her work.
