This sculpture, with its galloping pose, expresses a sense of motion. It is part of a group of massive horses created for tombs during the Eastern Han dynasty. In life, the Chinese valued horses for their use in military campaigns and for hunting. In death, horses were revered as a means of transport for the soul on the journey to the afterlife.
