Terms of Hercules and Deianeira

c. 1548
Giulio Bonasone (Italian, 1498–1580) After a design by Polidoro da Caravaggio (Italian, c. 1499–1543)
These imaginative terms are dressed to represent the ancient mythological figures Hercules and his wife Deianeira. Terms-which derive their name from Terminus, the Roman god of boundaries and landmarks-usually consist of a plain shaft surmounted by a head and shoulders.
