Pair of Carp with Stand

c. 1958
Takahashi Kaishū (Isamu) (Japanese, 1905–2004)
Takahashi Kaishü was a restless experimenter in metal. He carried into the twentieth century the traditional Kanazawa technique of bronze casting and intricate metal inlay known as Kaga zögan, bringing a distinctive appearance to his creations. The larger of these two carp is cast in matte charcoal-gray bronze inlaid with silver, the smaller in polished yellow bronze inlaid with shakudö (copper and gold alloy).
