Giovanni Lanfranco moved to Naples in 1634, after building a successful career as a painter in Rome. Among other works, he completed a series of paintings commissioned by the Spanish viceroy of Naples, who sent them to Spanish king Philip IV for his palace in Madrid.
In translating those painted compositions into prints such as this one, Lanfranco was participating in a growing market for print collecting, which enabled him to spread awareness of the paintings well beyond Madrid.
