A Girl Holding a Ciambella (Lemon Sponge Cake)

1755-1760
Marco Alvise Pitteri (Italian, 1702–1786) After a painting by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (Italian, 1682–1754)
Marco Alvise Pitteri developed a printmaking technique in which he employed a series of swelling and tapering parallel lines to capture the subtle tonal gradations of painting and drawings. This method was particularly well-suited for translating the works of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta into prints. A leading artist in Venice, Piazzetta produced altarpieces and intimate genre scenes, as well as designs for book illustrations and beautifully finished chalk drawings for collectors.
