Troublesome Result of Treatments Followed by M. Gobetout, Citizen of Paris

c. 1845
Cham (pseudonym for Count Amédée Charles Henri de Noé) (French, 1818–1879)
This satire on the proliferating variety of nineteenth-century medical sects illustrates the tribulations of poor Mr. Gobetout (Mr. Swallow Everything) as he is treated by a series of practitioners. Even though he feels good at the start, he is completely done in by the time he is finished, having been prescribed white mustard, a mustard plaster, hydropathy, a Mesmeric tub, homeopathy, and chemical analysis.
