Eugène Atget (French, 1857–1927)

Atget always used glass-plate negatives like the one seen here. When exposing a negative, he depended on natural light, most often employing long exposure times. The result was typically a detail-rich negative from which he could achieve a range of effects in printing (a pair of duplicate prints is displayed on another wall in this section). He filed all his negatives and printed from them continuously, as need arose.
