Interieurs Parisiens, Commencement du 20eme Scle., Artistiques Pittoresques et Bourgeois. Album No. 1 (Parisian Interiors at the Beginning of the 20th Century, Artistic, Picturesque, and Bourgeois. Album No. 1)

c. 1902-1911
Eugène Atget (French, 1857–1927)
Atget used this worksheet (secondary view), part of the interiors album displayed above, to work out his organization of the photographs for a public version of the album he sold to Paris libraries. In the public album, the interiors, which document ten Parisian homes, were grouped into twelve subjects (two of them fictional), almost like chapters in a novel. On the worksheet, Atget organized the negative numbers for the public album, assigning each group its "inhabitant." Here he identified some of the apartment dwellers by their actual names, but in the public album he identified them by surname initial, occupation, and neighborhood.
