Bowl with Lid

19th century
Artist/maker unknown, Chinese
The very elaborate design seen on this bowl, perhaps inspired by textiles, was produced with a technique called lai nam thong, or “gold wash.” Such works require as many as three firings in the kiln: one for the plain glaze, one after the enamel colors have been painted onto the surface, and a third firing at a lower temperature after the gold has been applied.
