Saucer

1781
Made by Sèvres porcelain factory, Sèvres, France (1756–present) Decorated by Pierre-Louis-Philippe Armand the Younger (French, active 1758–1781)
The decoration on this saucer, part of a rare breakfast set, a dark ground with silver and gold designs, imitates the ancient Japanese lacquer technique known as makie (literally "sprinkled picture"). The service was likely owned by the Duchess of Mazarin (1735-1781), a collector of, among other things, Japanese lacquer boxes.
