Blossoming Plum Tree, with Poems

19th century
Hayashi Roshū (Japanese, 1807–1879)
Unlike the other woodcuts in this gallery, this print includes a poem, which runs in graceful vertical lines around the flowering tree branches. The combination of art and poetry is distinctive to this category of Japanese prints, known as surimono (“printed things”) and produced in small numbers and presented as gifts.
