An American Drawn from Life (American Man Riding a Horse)

1861
Utagawa Yoshitomi (Japanese, active c. 1848-80) Published by Yamamotoya Heikichi Engraved by Katada Chōjirō, Buneidō
The tattooed figure standing behind the American on horseback is undoubtedly a Japanese groom. In Japan, men were customarily accompanied by a groom when they rode. These grooms would run alongside the riders, prepared to supply fresh straw shoes for the horse and to warn passersby to make way.
