The Public Promenade

1792
Philibert-Louis Debucourt (French, 1755–1832)
This print is thought to include portraits of specific individuals who would have been easily recognized by eighteenth-century audiences. One such figure is the dandy at right, blowing a kiss, who has been identified as the duc de Chartres, son of the duc d'Orléans, owner of the Palais Royal. Although the use of caricature in this work is somewhat less biting than in Debucourt's earlier print, The Palais Royal Gallery's Walk, it is still infused with a wicked sense of humor, as in the foreground at left where a man's chair has broken under him.
