Alexandra Exter (Russian (born Ukraine), 1882–1949)

The painter, theater designer, and graphic artist Alexandra Exter graduated from the Kiev School of Art in 1907, before completing her studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris between 1908 and 1914. It was during this early sojourn in the French capital that Exter met Picasso and Braque, whose paintings and collages had a profound impact on her future work. The artist spent World War I in Russia and remained there after the Russian Revolution of 1917, during which time she rejected easel painting in favor of utilitarian design. In 1924, Exter returned to France, where she made this vibrant composition that reflects her continued fascination with Cubism.
