Winter at Sea - Taking in Sail off the Coast

1869
After Winslow Homer (American, 1836–1910) Published by Harper's Weekly, New York
Homer may have been remembering his own trip across the North Atlantic when he composed this image of mariners reefing a sail in windy weather, high above the deck. His imaginative viewpoint, suspended in mid-air, gives a dizzying sense of the difficulty and danger of the sailor’s life.
