Moses Rescued from the Nile

c. 1655 (later edition)
Bartolommeo Biscaino (Italian, 1632–1657) Published by Daman (French or Italian, active 1640s–1650s)
The tonal areas in this print, especially striking in the foliage at the lower left, seem to be composed mostly of gray, dropletlike marks. While it is difficult to determine whether they were made deliberately or appeared accidently during the etching process, Biscaino took advantage of them, burnishing them away for the highlights (as seen in the woman's arm in the foreground) and leaving them in shadows.
