Hercules Slaying the Hydra, from the Hercules Fountain in Augsburg

c. 1602
Jan Harmensz. Muller (Dutch, 1571–1628) After a sculpture by Adriaen de Vries (Dutch, 1556–1626)
Muller's engraving style, with its swelling and tapering lines that define form without outlines, is especially well suited to rendering the dynamic sculptural form of Adriaen de Vries's monument, a fountain statue that itself animates its ancient prototypes--as if the Farnese Hercules had sprung into action.
