Ale Porto del Dolo

c. 1744-1746
Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal) (Italian (active Venice, Rome, and England), 1697–1768) Dedicated to Joseph Smith (British (active Venice), c. 1682–1770)
Canaletto's set of thirty-one etchings, dedicated to Consul Joseph Smith, combines famous sites in Venice, such as the Piazza San Marco, with imaginary scenes and views of the mainland. Here, a passenger barge leaves the locks at the town of Dolo on the Naviglio del Brenta, a modified channel of the Brenta River that connected Venice with the city of Padua. Travelers on the Grand Tour often made the journey to Venice down this section of the Brenta.
