Landscape with the Rape of Ganymede

c. 1603-1605
Jan Pietersz. Saenredam (Dutch, c. 1565–1607) After Abraham Bloemaert (Dutch, 1566–1651) Published by Jacques Razet (Dutch, died 1609) Poetry by D. Baudius
In Ovid's epic poem Metamorphoses, Jupiter assumes the form of an eagle to kidnap the beautiful young shepherd Ganymede and take him to Mount Olympus. Here, Abraham Bloemaert relegates the abduction scene to a minor role, in the sky between the two trees. The artist emphasizes instead the farmyard, which is dramatically framed by a pair of trees.
