Dish (one of a pair)

c. 1730-1750
Artist/maker unknown, Chinese
This eggshell porcelain dish is decorated in a range of pastel shades of overglaze enamels popular in China in the early eighteenth century. The combination of the rooster and peony blossoms is a rebus (a visual riddle in which the items pictured have names that sound like a word or phrase) conveying wishes for receiving official rank and honor, or for wealth, rank, and good fortune.
