Portrait of Hendrick Goltzius

1617
Jacob Matham (Dutch, 1571–1631) After a drawing by Hendrick Goltzius (Dutch (active Haarlem), 1558–1617)
This print was engraved by Jacob Matham, Goltzius’s stepson who worked in the Goltzius workshop and took over the business around 1599. Matham’s print honors his recently deceased stepfather by surrounding his portrait with the figures of Mercury (named Spirito in the print), Pallas (Disegno), and the Three Graces, all symbols of Goltzius’s enduring fame.
