The Expulsion from Paradise

1510
Lucas van Leyden (Netherlandish (active Leiden), c. 1494–1533)
Albrecht Dürer's Netherlandish rival Lucas van Leyden was at least eighteen years his junior. In this engraving, Lucas uses the windblown trees and plants of the hostile landscape beyond the Garden of Eden to display his precocious skill with the burin. Though Cain, the son of Adam and Eve, was born after the expulsion from paradise, the artist depicts the infant in the arms of the fleeing couple.
