Canterbury Pilgrims

1930
Rockwell Kent (American, 1882–1971)
Many of the books for which Kent provided illustrations appeared in limited editions that were marketed to book collectors and fine libraries. Kent furnished twenty-five full-page drawings for a 1930 edition of Chaucer’s late-fourteenth-century Canterbury Tales, portraying a motley cast of characters from every walk of life embarking on a pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral. This print, which brings together a select group of the pilgrims in a single composition, was included as a bonus in the deluxe edition of the publication. From left to right, the image depicts the Clerk, the Miller, the Wife of Bath, the Summoner, and the Monk.
