Le Petit Berger

c. 1854; 1921 (publication)
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (French, 1796–1875) Published by Maurice Le Garrec, Paris
This cliché verre, a new form of printmaking that Corot began experimenting with in the 1850s, depicts a lone, youthful shepherd piping to his flock. The artist adapted the composition from a painting of the same title he had made in 1840, but intensified the contrasts between light and dark using this new technique, creating a melancholic mood and giving the scene the quality of a timeless reverie.
