Woman's Dress and Short Jacket

1956
Designed by Pauline Trigère (American, born Paris, 1908–2002) Sold by Nan Duskin, Philadelphia (1926–1994)
This black wool ensemble shows Pauline Trigère's superb tailoring skills. The dress is shaped in front by flaring vertical seams below centered bust darts. The fashionable ultrashort bolero jacket is cut on the bias in the front; although it does have buttons up the back, it closes with a hook and eye under the front bow. The silhouette is completed by a dramatic hat with a wide, flat corona of feathers around a small teardrop-shaped base.
