The Genius of the Fine Arts

c. 1784
Felice Giani (Italian, 1758–1823)
Giani headed a team of decorative painters and stucco artists whose lively ensembles embellished houses and palaces in numerous cities in central Italy, as well as a few in France. The extravagance and individuality of his style, Neoclassical yet exaggerated and energetic to the edge of fantasy, have led art historians to interpret him-loosely-as one of the precursors of Romantic painting. This is one of his earlier works, reflecting his training in Bologna and perhaps dating near the beginning of his first stay in Rome (1780-98).
