Abraham Entertaining the Three Angels

1708-1712
Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari (Italian, 1654–1727)
Chiari was one of the central figures bridging the transition between the late Baroque and early Neoclassicism in eighteenth-century Roman painting. This drawing illustrates an Old Testament scene from the book of Genesis in which the patriarch Abraham is visited by three angels disguised as mortals, for whom he prepares a grand banquet, unaware of their heavenly status.
