This baluster-shaped jar is decorated in the Imari style of Japanese porcelain—characterized by designs in deep blue and red with gold glazes­—that was greatly admired in the Netherlands. The shoulder displays oval cartouches enclosing oxen and carp, which are symbols of perseverance, endurance, and strength.
