Rübezahl

1848-1849
Adrian Ludwig Richter (German, 1803–1884) Published by the Sächsische Kunstverein , Dresden
According to popular legend, Rübezahl is a gruff giant who lives in the mountain range along the border between the Czech Republic and Poland. He is friendly to good people, teaching them medicine and giving them presents, but to those who mock him, he is fierce and unforgiving. He often appears as a wily trickster in Czech and Polish folk tales.
