1761
Johann Georg Wille (German (active France), 1715–1808) After a painting dated 1755 by Louis Tocqué (French, 1696–1772)
Madame de Pompadour used her influence to have her brother Abel-François Poisson, marquis de Marigny, named director of the King's Buildings (Bâtiments du roi). Here Marigny is shown unfurling architectural plans for the École Militaire, a military academy for worthy young men of the nobility founded in Paris by Louis XV in 1751 at the urging of Madame de Pompadour.
