The Martyrdom of Saint Eusebius

c. 1781
Ubaldo Gandolfi (Italian, 1728–1781)
Like his younger brother Gaetano, Ubaldo Gandolfi excelled at representing the human figure with great anatomical accuracy. Both brothers had studied in Bologna with a famous sculptor-anatomist named Ercole Lelli. This drawing is a study for a painting in the cathedral in Vercelli in northern Italy that had to be completed by Gaetano after Ubaldo's sudden death from typhoid in 1781. Saint Eusebius is the patron saint of Vercelli.
