St. Philip Neri Adoring the Christ Child

Francesco Mancini (Italian, 1679–1758) Formerly attributed to Mattia Preti (Italian, 1613–1699)

Although for many years this sheet was thought to be by the seventeenth-century Neapolitan painter Mattia Preti, it seems more likely that an old inscription on a margin applied to the paper identifies the author correctly as Francesco Mancini, a painter working more than a generation later than Preti in Rome and in the provinces of Emilia and the Marches rather than in Campania.
