The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception Adored by Saints Anthony of Padua, Francis, Clare of Assisi, and Louis of Toulouse and an Unidentified Cleric

c. 1718
Francesco Solimena (called l'Abate Ciccio) (Italian, 1657–1747)
Solimena was the leading painter of the Neapolitan Baroque during the first half of the eighteenth century, creating many decorations in oil and fresco in and around Naples, a city that at that time rivaled Rome and Madrid in the fervor of its faith and the opulence of its ecclesiastical architecture and decoration. This sheet is a study for the major altarpiece in an obscure church in Naples, San Francesco delle Cappucinelle.
