An Offering to Ceres

1640s?
Andrea de Leone (Italian, 1610–1685) Formerly attributed to Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (called il Grechetto) , and (Italian, 1609–1664) Formerly attributed to Pietro Testa (Italian, 1612–1650)
The subject of this composition has been identified as a sacrifice to the ancient Italian goddess of agriculture, Ceres, because of the conspicuous presence of sheaves of grain. The poses and arrangement of the figures draw closely on paintings and drawings by Nicolas Poussin and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione.
