Tomb Guardian Beast

618-907
Artist/maker unknown, Chinese
This tomb guardian appears to be a hybrid creature composed of a horned humanlike head atop an animal body. In Tang dynasty tombs, such figures often belonged to an extensive group or entourage, including guardian warriors, servants, and horses or camels with their grooms, all of which would provide protection and comfort to the deceased.
