Woman's Hat

2001
Designed by Deirdre Hawken (British, born 1945)
Millinery has often displayed both exquisite craftsmanship and whimsy. English designer Deirdre Hawken's faux-food hats continue this tradition and explore the ambiguous relationship of women to fashion and food. Hawken was inspired to make this tiny hat with chili peppers after a visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where she saw Elsa Schiaparelli's jacket with vegetable buttons, part of the Museum's extensive holdings of the surrealist designer's work.
