Mount Daibosatsu

1981
Moriyama Daidō (Japanese, born 1938)
Like Daido Moriyama's photographs of a rose and of blossoming cherry trees, this view of a patch of meadow on Mount Daibosatsu, a popular day-trip from metropolitan Tokyo, is dissonant amidst his gritty urban pictures. However, his seemingly indiscriminate approach to subjects belies a critical eye: he photographs democratically and relentlessly as if in response to the constant flux of mediated images circulating through the world. Although at first glance his photographs often look as indifferent as the images we see everywhere, they are carefully and intensely crafted, each one the record of a particular experience.
