Pitcher with the Coat of Arms of Amsterdam

c. 1600
Artist/maker unknown, German
The coat of arms of Amsterdam on this unusual pitcher reflects the importance of Dutch merchants in the trade of stonewares, particularly to England and colonies in North America. London was an important market; it has been estimated that from 1600 to 1640, ten million Frechen stoneware vessels were imported there.
