Sugar Box

1753-1754
Workshop of Thomas Heming (English (active London), active c. 1745–c. 1795)
This sugar box is part of a group of pieces dating from about 1745 to about 1770 that are decorated with figures, both European and Asian, male and female, in the act of picking tea. The designs---imitations and evocations of Chinese art---are known as chinoiserie, and illustrate the eighteenth-century fascination with all things Asian.
