Point-Paper Design (Mise-en-carte)

The mise-en-carte or point-paper design enabled the silk designer to transfer a freehand sketch into instructions for the drawloom. The spaces between the horizontal and vertical rows of lines correspond to the warp and weft threads of the weaving. The front of this point paper is inscribed with the name of the designer, Joseph Veret of Lyon, and the back specifies the type of fabric to be woven, the brocade, and how the yarns were to be threaded onto the loom. This design was used for fabrics similar to the two examples shown above and at left. The point paper was printed by Marie-Anne Brenier, the period's leading point-paper maker and Veret's wife.
