The Entombment

Early to mid- 18th century
Johann Balthasar Probst (German, 1673–1750) In the manner of Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471–1528)
This print is a pastiche of motifs from many different Dürer engravings; Mary's pose, to the right of the composition, recalls that of the famous figure in Dürer's Melencolia. Although to modern eyes the finished product is hardly deceptive, it is signed with Dürer's monogram on the tablet that hangs from the tree.
