Base Hospital (Second Stone)

1918
George Bellows (American, 1882–1925)
Appalled by the horrors of World War I, Bellows began a series of lithographs on stone in 1918 that eventually comprised seventeen prints (the last appeared at the end of 1918, a month after the signing of the armistice). As its title indicates, this print is a revision of an earlier lithograph that was abandoned. In both prints a physician works on the shoulder of a wounded soldier in a dressing station set up inside a cathedral.
