Flower Arrangements

1841
Gyōsui (Japanese, active 19th century)
The art of flower arranging originated in China. This handscroll shows a variety of traditional Chinese-style flower arrangements painted by a single artist. Gyosui continues another Chinese tradition, that of emulating artists of the past. In his inscription, Gyosui states that he modeled his scroll on an earlier Chinese example in a friend's collection.
