Decorative Paper with Animals of the Hunt

Late 16th century
Artist/maker unknown, French
Hand-colored papers of this kind were used for a variety of decorative purposes, including lining boxes and decorating walls. This paper was used as a book jacket, as is evident in the strong vertical crease in the center as well as in the doodles its owner drew on it. The print's playful optical perspectives imitate those found in contemporary inlaid wood and marble.
