Saint Sebastian Tended by Saint Irene

c. 1750s
Jacob Matthias Schmutzer (Austrian, 1733–1811) After Pietro da Cortona (Pietro Berrettini) (Italian, 1596–1669)
Saint Sebastian was a Roman soldier of the early Christian era who was martyred, by being shot full of arrows, for having befriended Christians. Here he is shown being nursed by Saint Irene and others, who patiently remove the arrows and dress his wounds. Although there is no official patron saint of nursing, Saint Irene often assumes this role.
