"LAX" Armchair

Designed 1948-1950
Designed by Charles Eames (American, 1907–1978) , and Ray Eames (American, 1912–1988) Shell made from 1950 by the Zenith Plastics Company, Gardena, California Made for the Herman Miller Furniture Company, Zeeland, Michigan (1923–present)
The metal version of this chair won second prize at the Museum of Modern Art's Low Cost Furniture Design competition in 1948. When the chair was put into production two years later, a sturdier fiberglass shell replaced the metal one. This updated model came in six colors and was available with steel rod legs—like the ones on this chair—a wire cage base, a cast-aluminum base, or birch rockers.
