Portrait of Hirsch (Jechiel) Michel (1722 - 1780), Polish Rabbi in Potsdam from 1760 to 1777

1762
Georg Friedrich Schmidt (German, 1712–1775) In the manner of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (Dutch, 1606–1669)
The leading portrait printmaker in mid-eighteenth-century Berlin, Schmidt became famous in part for his prints that reproduced Rembrandt's compositions. Even in this print, which according to the inscription was made from life, he chose a subject and technique that recall his etchings done in Rembrandt's manner. The vivid characterization and exotic costume of the sitter are particularly Rembrandtesque.
