Byzantine Vase

c. 1900
Designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) Made by Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, Corona, New York (1892–1902)
Tiffany’s use of historical sources is demonstrated in this vase’s “Byzantine” decoration—zigzag patterns based on fourth-century glass wares—and “Tell el-Amarna blue” color. This intense blue was found on glazed pottery unearthed at Tell el-Amarna, the capital city of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten.
